After a league record of 16-1, the Trinity boys rolled through the playoffs to eventually meet Tri-City Christian Academy in the state title game on Thursday night. Having met and defeated Tri-City during the regular season, the re-match proved to be a highly competitive affair.
Led by six Warrior seniors, Trinity showed from the tip-off that they can run the floor, press full-court, and have multiple players who can score from inside and out. Throughout the game, Carson Feddema (senior) set the tone with steady ball handling from beginning to end. The fast-paced first quarter ended with the Warriors in the lead 12-9. In the second period, Tri-City managed to set effective screens to open space for their star player to score several open baskets. At half-time, Tri-City led 21-20.
Despite defensive adjustments and Issac Dykstra (senior) contributing 11 points, Tri-City continued to lead 37-36 at the end of three quarters of play. The fourth quarter began with Jackson Wright's (senior) three-pointer, and Trinity was off and running. Jaden Micale (senior) contributed some gritty and clutch points in the paint. A strong Warrior defense generated turnovers and quick points, allowing Trinity to jump out to a 10 point lead with five minutes left in the game. At this time, Ethan Brenner (senior) fouled out of the game after doing an amazing job throughout limiting the scoring of Tri-City's star player. Trinity continued a furious pace, extended their lead to 50-39 with 2:14 left in the game, and never looked back. Final score: 55-43!
Nearly 300 Trinity families, friends, faculty, staff, students, and alumni made their presence felt as they cheered the Warriors to victory at the Cactus High School arena. This win represents the first ever boys basketball championship for Trinity! Congratulations!
Player of the Game honors went to Issac Dykstra (senior), who scored 21 points, went 5-6 at the free throw line, and dished out five assists. Along with this, the Game Ball was presented to Coach Bud Swanson.
The basketball team's scripture verse this year was, "Whatever you do work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ" (Colossians 3:23-24). The Warrior boys represented God the Father and Trinity in a way we can all be pleased. Join us in congratulating the players and coaches of the 2024 CAA Division I Basketball Champion Trinity Christian Warriors!
